What is Pilates?

Welcome to Recharged Pilates, East Lansing’s newest boutique Pilates studio! Whether you're a student looking to relieve stress, an athlete aiming to improve performance, or simply someone seeking a stronger, more balanced body, Pilates is for you. But what exactly is Pilates? Let’s chat about it.

The History of Pilates

Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who believed in the power of movement to heal and strengthen the body. Originally called “Contrology,” Pilates was designed to improve flexibility, strength, and mind-body awareness. It gained popularity among dancers and athletes before evolving into a widely practiced form of exercise that benefits people of all fitness levels. Today, Pilates is recognized for its ability to enhance core strength, improve posture, and support overall well-being.

Mat Pilates vs. Reformer Pilates: What’s the Difference?

Pilates can be practiced in different ways, with the two most common methods being Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates.

  • Mat Pilates is performed on a mat using body weight and small props like resistance bands, rings, and balls to create resistance. It focuses on core strength, flexibility, and controlled movements.

  • Reformer Pilates utilizes a specialized machine called the Reformer, which features a sliding carriage, springs, and straps to provide resistance. This method offers a greater range of motion and adjustable resistance, allowing for a more dynamic and customized workout.

Both forms of Pilates emphasize precision, control, and breathwork, but Reformer Pilates offers added support and versatility that can help deepen your practice.

The Different Pilates Apparatus

Beyond the Reformer, there are several other pieces of Pilates equipment designed to enhance your workout:

  • Cadillac (Trapeze Table): A large apparatus with bars, straps, and springs that provides endless exercise variations for strength, flexibility, and rehabilitation.

  • Wunda Chair: A compact piece of equipment that challenges stability and strengthens the core, arms, and legs.

  • Ladder Barrel: Designed to improve flexibility and back extension while also challenging balance and coordination.

  • Spine Corrector: A smaller piece of equipment that helps with spinal alignment and core engagement.

Each of these Pilates apparatuses adds variety and challenge to workouts, making Pilates accessible to all fitness levels.
